In an informative Q&A session, we are proud to introduce Erica Uzpen, our Director of Compliance and Education Systems at CorrHealth. With a rich background in healthcare and a passion for correctional nursing, Erica shares insights into her journey, role, and vision for the future of correctional healthcare.
Could you share about your journey and experience in healthcare?
Erica: My healthcare journey has spanned my entire adult life, starting with roles as an EMT, a CNA, and an RN. My path took a pivotal turn in 2010 when I began my career in correctional nursing as a night shift floor nurse. It was then that I discovered my true calling. Having served in both juvenile and adult corrections across various levels, my career evolved into nursing leadership, leading me to my current role as the Director of Compliance and Education at CorrHealth.
What does your role at CorrHealth involve?
Erica: My role at CorrHealth allows me to support and work alongside our Compliance and Training departments. We focus on developing comprehensive training for our staff and facilitating the smooth transition of new employees. Our goal is to ensure our healthcare services meet the highest standards of care, fostering innovation and creativity in our approaches.
What has been the most exciting part of your Director of Compliance & Education Systems role?
Erica: Interestingly, the answer to this question has remained constant throughout my nursing career; eagerness to serve my patients and support my peers. This goal is enhanced in my role as we create and deliver new ways to support our sites. I have the privilege of being synergistic with our site team members as I help promote best practices in correctional care, guide them to gain an understanding of their local implementation, and learn from each unique team member.
What do you think is often misunderstood about correctional healthcare by Nursing and Medical School candidates?
Erica: Many candidates perceive correctional healthcare as unsafe for practicing compliant medicine. Contrary to this belief, correctional facilities tend to be safer than many traditional healthcare settings. They provide a unique opportunity to deliver high levels of care, sometimes being the first healthcare interaction our patients have had in a long time.
How do you balance your professional demands with your personal life?
Erica: I believe everything is about balance. I work hard and find time to play hard, too. I make sure to include time for my family, eat well, and exercise. I keep a daily list of tasks slated for completion, which allows me to stay mentally focused and achieve my goals.
Can you tell us about your hobbies or interests outside of work?
Erica: Outside of work, I’m passionate about the outdoors, adventure, and travel. I’m always engaged in some project, be it around the house or a new photo book. Cooking, meal planning, and volunteering as a firefighter in my community are also activities I enjoy.
What achievements in your career are you most proud of?
Erica: Earning my Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Wyoming in 2019 was a significant milestone. My research on medication-assisted treatment (MAT) has been particularly fulfilling, allowing me to set up MAT programs in correctional facilities, which is something very close to my heart. My role with CorrHealth allows me to apply what I have learned in nursing school and practical experience within an exciting new realm.
Looking forward, what goals do you have in your role at CorrHealth?
Erica: I’m eager to continue our training and compliance initiatives, keeping them innovative and engaging. Ensuring ethical and appropriate patient care is a core goal, and I’m excited about the impact we can make in the lives of those we serve.
