In correctional healthcare, strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication are essential for providing safe, compassionate care. Athena Sanchez, RN, exemplifies each of these qualities in her role at the Taos County Adult Detention Center, where she is a key member of the medical team and a trusted resource for inmate patients, colleagues, and leadership alike.
A Journey Led by Purpose
Athena joined CorrHealth after receiving a personal recommendation from Medical Provider Abe Balsamo, PA-C. Attracted to the chance to use her skills in a meaningful setting, she quickly became a key member of the team. Her dedication to quality care shows in everything she does—from patient assessments to crisis management and ongoing support for individuals with complex medical needs.
A Day in the Life
As a floor nurse, Athena’s days include patient assessments, clinical decision-making, and hands-on support for individuals with both acute and chronic conditions. Whether coordinating detox checks, evaluating wounds, managing ongoing medical concerns, or simply checking on patient wellbeing, Athena plays a key role in identifying early signs of problems and preventing complications.
“At its core, nursing here is about precision,” Athena shares. “Good assessment skills make all the difference. Even the smallest detail can indicate something important.” Her diligence and deep clinical curiosity drive her to ask questions, seek understanding, and keep learning—traits that elevate the quality of care delivered at the facility.
A Team Built on Trust and Support
Working with her highly supportive team is one of the aspects Athena values most about CorrHealth and the Taos County site. She credits her leadership, especially her Health Services Administrator Shandi Mirabal, for fostering a collaborative environment based on respect and shared purpose.
Sandi speaks very highly of Athena, sharing:
“Athena is the backbone of our Taos site. Our office would not function without her. She is detail-oriented, hardworking, knowledgeable, and provides exceptional nursing care. She never hesitates to step in to help and is highly respected by all who work with her. We are so proud to have Athena on our team.”
Motivation and Mindset
Driven by a desire for excellence and a deep love of learning, Athena continually strives to understand the “why” behind medical responses and patient symptoms. Her analytical approach and passion for continuous improvement enhance both patient outcomes and team efficiency.
Life Beyond the Facility
Outside of work, Athena finds joy and balance through creativity and spending time with her child. When asked if they had discovered any new activities, she mentioned, “We have recently found the joy of 3D printing.”
In the colder months, she loves crocheting, painting, sketching, baking, and dancing around the living room. When the weather warms, you can find her planting flowers and vegetables, fishing, swimming, and exploring outdoors—often collecting rocks, much to the washing machine’s dismay. Soon, her family plans to raise chicks, hoping to gather their own homegrown eggs next year.
Thank You, Athena
Athena, your dedication, clinical excellence, and compassion make a remarkable impact every day. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to “Do Right,” for the care you provide to your inmate patients, and for the strength and leadership you bring to the Taos team. CorrHealth is both grateful and proud to have you as part of our family.
