For Sonya Barrera, RN, BSN, healthcare has never been just a profession. It is a calling that began early and has grown into a role where she now helps guide and support care at the Adams County Detention Facility each day.
Through her consistency, compassion, and commitment to “Do Right”, Sonya brings a steady presence to an environment that depends on it. At CorrHealth, that kind of dedication does not go unnoticed. It is deeply valued, and it is felt in the work she does and the people she supports every day
A Calling Rooted in Care
Sonya’s path into healthcare started long before she formally entered the field. From a young age, she felt drawn to caring for others. She recalls writing in kindergarten that she wanted to be a nurse, long before fully understanding what that meant.
As she continued her journey, that early instinct became something more defined. Healthcare was not simply a career choice. It was where she felt a true sense of purpose.
“The ability to make a meaningful impact in someone’s life, often during their most vulnerable moments, is what drives me every day,” Sonya shares.
That purpose continues to shape her work as an HSA, where her influence reaches beyond individual patient interactions and into the systems and teams that support daily operations.
Finding Alignment with CorrHealth
Sonya’s journey with CorrHealth began during a transition in medical vendors at the Adams County Detention Facility. Like many others, she initially felt some uncertainty about what the change would bring. That perspective quickly shifted as she experienced CorrHealth’s leadership and support firsthand.
Meeting members of the leadership team early in the transition helped establish trust and set the tone for what was ahead. What stood out most to Sonya was the organization’s willingness to listen.
“When we bring forward ideas or concerns, we feel heard,” she explains. “Those conversations often lead to meaningful improvements.”
She also values the transparency that follows those conversations. Even when changes cannot be implemented, there is clear communication around why. That level of openness has helped create a culture where team members feel respected, informed, and empowered.
What It Means to Be an HSA
As a Health Services Administrator, Sonya oversees the daily operations of both medical and mental health services within the facility. Her role requires balancing clinical understanding with operational oversight, ensuring that care is delivered safely, consistently, and in alignment with established standards.
Her days include supporting staff, maintaining compliance with policies and accreditation requirements, addressing patient care concerns, and collaborating closely with custody and leadership teams. Each day brings new challenges, which require adaptability, organization, and steady decision-making.
While much of her work involves visible leadership and coordination, a significant portion happens behind the scenes. Communication, documentation, workflow management, and proactive planning all play a critical role in keeping operations running smoothly.
These efforts may not always be seen, but they are essential to maintaining continuity of care and supporting the overall function of the facility.
A Team That Shows Up
One of the aspects Sonya appreciates most about her work is the team around her. She describes a group that is dedicated, resilient, and committed to providing care in a fast-paced and often challenging environment.
“They show up every day ready to provide care,” she says.
There is a strong sense of accountability and mutual support among the team. Whether managing complex patient needs or responding to unexpected situations, collaboration remains a constant. That shared commitment helps ensure that care stays consistent and responsive.
Driven by Responsibility
What motivates Sonya in her role is the people she supports each day. Her staff, the Adams County Detention Facility team, and the inmate patients they serve all play a role in driving her forward.
Balancing the needs of healthcare staff with the demands of a correctional environment requires a thoughtful and steady approach. Sonya remains focused on maintaining high standards, supporting her team, and improving processes that strengthen patient care.
Her work is guided by a clear sense of responsibility and a commitment to doing what is right, even in complex situations.
Creativity in Unexpected Ways
While Sonya’s role is largely operational, she also brings a creative perspective to her work. She enjoys designing training materials and creating custom recognition items for her team.
These efforts allow her to make the workplace more engaging and meaningful. Whether supporting learning or recognizing contributions, she finds ways to bring thoughtfulness into everyday moments.
Life Outside of Work
Outside of her role at the Adams County Detention Facility, Sonya values time spent with family and staying active. She enjoys hiking and cycling, taking advantage of Colorado’s outdoors as a way to recharge.
She is also a dedicated Colorado Avalanche fan and enjoys following the team throughout the season. In addition, she enjoys planning trips and exploring new places, embracing opportunities to step away from routine and experience something new.
A Lasting Impact
Sonya’s work reflects the values that define CorrHealth. Her ability to balance operational responsibilities with care and consistency plays an important role in the success of her facility.
The impact she makes is seen in her team, her approach, and the environment she helps create each day. It is a reflection of steady commitment, thoughtful leadership, and a genuine dedication to the people she serves.
